The Historic Preservation League of Oregon (HPLO) takes an active role in preserving and revitalizing historic communities throughout the state. The HPLO has recently increased its efforts to assist Oregon's rural communities, small towns and urban neighborhoods with technical training in community planning and design and historic rehabilitation.

The Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway was built by James J. Hill, the "Empire Builder," who also built the Great Northern Railway and who controlled the Northern Pacific and Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroads. Hill's GN, NP, and CB&Q lines linked Chicago with Seattle. GN and NP trains originally reached Portland via the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company, which followed the south side of the Columbia River for much of its route

In 1948 a group of citizens concerned with keeping the history of the Applegate Trail and the Rogue Valley alive founded the Josephine County Historical Society. Interest in establishing a Josephine County Historical Society was renewed in 1959, Oregon's Centennial year. Then on August 15, 1960 in the historic Masonic Hall in Kerby the first annual meeting was held.

The Marion County Historical Society, founded in 1950, is a non-profit organization that advocates and promotes an appreciation of regional history by present and future generations. The Society connects the past to the present by preserving and interpreting the county's cultural and natural history. With more than 400 members, the society operates a museum, educational and publication programs, and is an active partner with community organizations.
